Hip Dysplasia in the Cane Corso: Prevention from the Kennel

Hip dysplasia is one of the most common and painful orthopedic conditions affecting large and giant dog breeds. It occurs when the hip joint fails to develop properly, leading to wear, pain, and eventually severe arthritis. At Viziato, preventing this condition is our highest priority.
How We Prevent Dysplasia at the Kennel While hip dysplasia has environmental triggers, its foundation is highly genetic. * **Official X-Rays**: All our breeding dogs undergo official radiological screening once they reach skeletal maturity (after 18 months of age). * **International Certifications**: We only breed dogs that have received official clearances of dysplasia-free hips (FCI Grade A or B, or excellent ratings via PennHIP/OFA). Any dog showing signs of joint laxity is strictly excluded from our program.
The Environmental Component: What Families Can Do at Home Even a puppy with excellent genetics can develop joint issues due to poor environmental management during their rapid growth phase. * **Avoid Slippery Floors**: Slick hardwood, marble, or polished tile causes the puppy's paws to slide, placing immense stress on their joints. Use area rugs in main walkways during their first year. * **Prevent Impact and Jumping**: Do not allow the puppy to jump out of cars, off couches, or run up and down stairs repeatedly before 12 months of age. * **Joint Supplements**: Providing joint protectants (glucosamine and chondroitin) during growth helps nourish developing joint cartilage. * **Keep Them Lean**: Excess weight places harmful pressure on growing bones and joints. Keep your Cane Corso puppy at an optimal, lean weight.
